Husband was cleaning his tool bench and came across this. Any idea what it's for? It says "patent pending".

Yes, that was Grandpa Lanes. It's used when putting up wire fences.
The flat side is for pounding in "U" staples. The pointy end is for pulling them out. The two notches are for twisting pieces of wire together. A tool like this can be bought today at Tractor Supply. (Sans pipe)
